În prima parte a filmului Kobayashi arată drama tânărului Kaji (Tatsuza Nakadai), un tânăr ambițios care lucrează ca supervizor într-o închisoare din Manchuria și lupta sa cu societatea japoneză, aflată la acele vremuri sub influența nefastă a fascismului. On their way to an afternoon on the lake, husband and wife Andrzej and Krystyna nearly run over a young hitchhiker.
