Fantômas revine cu o idee nouă: să impună celor bogați (nobili și gangsteri) o taxă pe dreptul la viață. Aterizat în Scoția, comisarul Juve, Fandor și logodnica lui sunt în misiune pentru a-l prinde pe Fantômas. Într-un castel bântuit de spirite, Juve, care se presupune că îi protejează pe proprietari, este el însuși o victimă a umorului macabru al lui Fantômas, care își folosește și abuzează de măștile extravagante și de râsul său cavernos. El îl mânuiește pe bietul comisar Juve, atârnând în camera lui oamenii spânzurați. Când Fantômas trece, cineva moare.

Louis de Funès joacă rolul unui om de afaceri al cărui contabil îi mărturisește într-o dimineață că a sustras o mare sumă de bani, că este îndrăgostit de fiica lui și că nu poate fi dat în judecată pentru că, în acest caz, va dezvălui fiscului adevărata avere a patronului. În aceeași dimineață, fiica mărturisește că este însărcinată. Totul pare să se rezolve, dar se dovedește că tânăra iubită de contabil nu este fiica patronului, că propria lui fiică este îndrăgostită de șoferul tatălui ei și că, de fapt, nici nu este însărcinată și că maseurul omului de afaceri vrea să-i devină acestuia ginere. Se adaugă și doica, și o veche menajeră a familiei, și o valiză cu bijuterii care este, evident, înlocuită mereu cu altă valiză, similară, conținând haine.Toate încurcăturile îi prilejuiesc lui Louis de Funès crize de furie, în care actorul este neîntrecut.

În timpul unui select dineu, organizat la Grand Restaurant, dispare șeful unui stat sud-american, iar patronul localului, dl Septine, devine primul suspectat. O organizație teroristă, lansată pe urmele politicianului dispărut, preia restaurantul, care astfel se transformă într-un spațiu propice jocului de-a v-ați ascuns-elea, la care participă, de-a valma, polițiști, ziariști și personalul dlui Septine. Protagonist este regretatul actor francez Louis De Funes, unul dintre cei mai populari comedianți europeni din anii ’70 - ’80.
